SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

WHAT DO SURGICAL TECHS DO?

Surgical Technicians are skilled individuals tasked with assisting in the operating room. They have the responsibility of passing sterile operating instruments to surgeons, holding instruments, setting up equipment, specimen handling for laboratory analysis, and maintaining a sterile environment. Surgical Techs are usually under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This is an Associate Degree in Applied Science program. The curriculum includes science courses selected to provide a basis for the clinical and theory application of principles used in Surgical Technology. Basic courses in the theoretical aspects of Surgical Technology include lecture, clinical, and on-line instruction. All Surgical Technology courses must be passed with a minimum grade of C+. The goal of the program is to prepare entry-level surgical technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

CLINICAL

Throughout the program, students are provided with hands-on experience in cooperation with various hospitals under the direction of the Program Director/Instructor. Each partner college will provide preceptors and clinical education sites within their service area for students accepted into the program.

POST-GRADUATE OUTCOMES

The program leads to an Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology. The graduates will then prepared to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting national certification exam.
